"Learn From Me" - Part 5 (Hebrews 4:14-16)

In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus offered a two-fold invitation. First, Jesus offered rest. But Jesus also offered an opportunity to learn of Him (KJV) or from Him (NKJV). We want to learn "of" or about Jesus. We also want to learn "from" Him. Over the next several weeks, we're going to look at several passages in an effort to do just that.

Do you ever feel like no one knows what you're going through? Do you ever feel like you're the only one who has ever experienced anything like what you're experiencing? If so, hopefully today's passage--Hebrews 4:14-16--will give you some encouragement.

Jesus is a great High Priest
  1. Jesus is both God and man. He is "Jesus, the Son of God." He is the Savior of man and He is Son of God. In His unique position, Jesus unites God and man. Only Jesus can bring man to God (John 14:6) and only Jesus can bring to man all that God has to offer (Ephesians 1:7).
  2. Jesus is better than any other high priest who ever lived in that while He lived, He never sinned. He was tempted. He had opportunity to sin. Jesus faced the same problems that every high priest before Him faced. Jesus faced the same problems that each of us face today. But Jesus never sinned.
  3. Because Jesus was a man and because He was tempted just like we are, Jesus understands us. He knows our struggles. He's been there, so He feels for us and He feels with us. He wants to help us. He wants to provide access to the Father for us.
Jesus is our access
  1. Because Jesus is God and because Jesus lived perfectly as a man, He is now in heaven with His Father. And because of all of this, we have a wonderful opportunity. If Jesus is our High Priest, we have the opportunity to come before the "throne of grace."
  2. There is no trial so great that we can't find relief. There is no temptation so strong that we can't find help. The writer tells us that we can "boldly" come before God and "obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
  3. We want mercy and grace. We need mercy and grace. We need mercy (pardon for our sins) and we need grace (unmerited favor) to have any hope for a future. We can find it and we can have it! Jesus has given us the way.

Do you have struggles? Do you have problems? Do you have needs?

There is no better place to go for help than to the "throne of grace." You can get there and get help. You can receive mercy and grace.

But to get there and to receive that help, Jesus must be your High Priest.

Jesus becomes your High Priest when you become part of God's kingdom--the church. God adds you to the church when you are obedient and submit your will to His in baptism.

Is Jesus your High Priest?
